Although many organizations have successfully developed fabrics that are waterproof and breathable, most of the solutions are mixed with toxic chemicals. But now, scientists have found a better alternative solution from the environmentally friendly coating made of wax and starch.

In order to make this new coating, researchers from Finland Artaud university first extracted palm wax from palm leaves in Brazil. It is widely used in automobile protection wax, medicine and food products, which can be said to be relatively harmless raw materials.

The research team melted and decomposed the wax in water to form a wax solution with negative electricity. Because cellulose, which forms the natural fabric fiber, is also negatively charged, it is necessary to add positive charge buffer to the middle so as to adhere the wax particles to the fiber.

Although previous studies have shown that a protein called poly lysine is adequate for the job, scientists found a much cheaper material, starch, because the protein was very expensive.

The wax / starch solution is applied to organic fabrics such as viscose fiber, Tencel, cotton and * * by means of dip coating, spraying and brushing. In all cases, this process makes the material hydrophobic, while maintaining its breathability and natural touch. On the contrary, when the conventional waterproofing coating is applied to the same type of fabric, its permeability decreases.

Unfortunately, in the present form, Aalto coatings are not well washable for detergents. Therefore, it is recommended that its use be limited to items that are not frequently washed, such as jackets, and consumers can spray the new paint onto the top after each washing.
