Giant Panda Rainstorm In Sichuan

The forestry department was informed that in the morning of July 5, 2011, a villagers in Yingxiu town of Wenchuan County found a giant panda's body in the Hui Shui Tai reservoir of the Zipingpu Reservoir.

After being dissected by the Wolong conservation Giant Panda Research Center in China, the giant panda was drowned and excluded human injury factors.

Adult males aged ten years old, whose teeth were healthy, without obvious wear and tear, tongue damaged, severe abdominal distention, abdominal and extremities partly washed by water, and no other obvious injuries were found.

Judging from the findings and anatomy, the cause of the death of the giant panda is drowning, excluding the cause of human injury. It is very likely that the rainstorm and debris flows in recent days have rushed out of the habitat and into the Yingxiu reach of the Minjiang River.

Destruction of protected sites, roads, electricity and other infrastructures in Wolong, Mei Feng davfeng, and Saddle River and other natural reserves has damaged the gully vegetation, and some giant panda habitat has been lost.

In view of rainstorm and debris flow disasters, the Forestry Department of Sichuan province has asked all localities to investigate and understand the damage of the protected areas' infrastructure and the habitat of giant pandas in the area as soon as possible under the premise of guaranteeing the personal safety of field workers. At the same time, all wildlife protection agencies should be urged to strengthen the patrol and rescue of wild animals such as giant pandas in the area, so as to minimize the impact and damage caused by floods and debris flows.
