According to the Pakistan business records March 26th, the US Chamber of Commerce and the US Pakistan Business Council, as two of the two most influential lobbying groups in the United States, recently issued a strong appeal to the Obama administration to cut tariffs on imports of textiles from Pakistan as an important part of helping Pakistan to realize the new strategy of political stability.

The report believes that lowering tariffs on textiles imports from Pakistan will help the United States achieve its geopolitical goals in South Asia and eradicate extreme terrorist activities.

The report supports the proposal of the United States to establish a reconstruction opportunity zone (ROZ) on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and allow products to enter the United States in the region. It also praised Senator Kerry-Lugar's proposal to increase the US aid to Pakistan by two times to 1 billion 500 million dollars a year.

The United States is Pakistan's largest trading partner, the largest export market and the fifth largest source of imports.

In the 2007-08 fiscal year, Pakistan exported $3 billion 710 million to the United States, while US exports to the United States were US $2 billion 440 million during the same period, accounting for 19.5% and 6.1% of exports and imports respectively.
